In the Fury

The poems in Ann Dernier’s debut collection, In the Fury, inventory the vagaries of womanhood---the bare intensity of being a mother, wife, lover. These lyric portraits, sonnets, and love poems stare back from the ardent loss within those boundaries. They shout requests into the Colosseum, illuminate the horror of a burned bride, French kiss a dictator---while at the same time finding beauty in the shard, the scree, the flaw... beauty in the ruins.  Through this collection, we can reflect on the wreckage in a world that at once enthralls and terrifies us, and what remains to explore.

It is true that we are multitudes, and within this collection, you will hear the many songs and landscapes that help build the world of contemporary poetry. This is an important collection because it demands that we, as female writers, not conform, rather, we must only write the things that are in us to be written.
 -Natalie Diaz

Writing Out of the Darkness
An Anthology of Poetry by Refugees in Transition

The story behind this collection of poems is built around the creation of a community of young immigrants from different parts of the world, who found in their art a renewed love of life and the courage to liberate themselves from oppression. In sharing their struggles, journeys and dream, the Owl and Panther poets inspire and give us hope that indeed another world is possible. -Jorge Cabrera, former therapist with the Hopi Foundation, Center for the Resolution and Prevention of Violence.

Behold the lives of refugee children who have encountered so much violence, brutality and death, and made it to the other side... of love, compassion, understanding and self-empowerment
